The Wave Desk by Robert Brou

The ‘Wave’ desk is the first of hopefully many works which utilize this ‘Slice’ technique. This desk was built for valued clients residing in Dallas, GA. Their requirements were for the desk towers to each have file folder storage with a drawer above. One tower has a smaller drawer with a pullout work surface above. This was designed so their young daughter could have a work area next to Mom and Dad’s.

What I created exceeded all of their expectations. The two towers are clad in 2 ½” thick Poplar lumber that is carved into a random ‘Wave’ pattern. Between each layer there is a ¾” tall reveal, just large enough to fit adult sized fingers. This eliminates any need for drawer pulls as you simply grab an individual section and pull. Poplar is naturally light in color with prominent green streaks so I stained the wood a Van Dyke Brown color to match the rest of their décor. I then came back with a spindle mounted wire brush to abrade the exposed vertical edge while keeping the top work surface perfectly sanded.

The wire brush exposes the grain in a very interesting way that creates a wonderful tactile quality. To my way of thinking this also mimics bark that is present on live edge slabs.
This ‘Slice’ technique is perfect for any cabinetry that uses drawers or pull out units. The innovation of having a way to create cabinetry that lies outside the ‘box’ as it were, is a very liberating feeling. I cannot wait to get back into the shop and explore these ideas more.

Brooklyn-based furniture designers Hellman-Chang recently teamed up with Swarovski to create a special collection of tables, which were displayed at ICFF. The limited edition series is comprised of Hellman-Chang’s most iconic pieces exquisitely accented with Swarovski “crystalized” elements.

Each piece is numbered and made by hand in Hellman-Chang’s Brooklyn studio. The tables are available in Powder White or Jet Black in either matte or high-polish.

‘Inori’ by Setsu & Shinobu Ito for Fiam (IT)

Fiam, the Italian specialist for glass furniture, presented this new shelving system by the Milano based designers Setsu & Shinobu Ito at this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan. ‘Inori’ is composed of 12 mm tempered glass shelves and bent glass pillars, which can be assembled in modular fashion, as a display cabinet, storage unit or TV cabinet, in wall-mounted or free-standing versions, as well as a bookcase. The uprights are freely adjustable on each shelf through sliding aluminium rails and fixing device.

Jean Paul Gaultier to Launch Home Furnishings

“Clothes are my job, and as I only know how to dress, I dressed this ELLE Decoration suite in the Cité de l’architecture & du Patrimoine, with various touches that already grace my collections.
 
First, the marine touch. Navy stripes are deployed and deformed on the walls, they are draped and curl around the furniture, a little “marine morphing” lounge that disappears in the white canvas.
Then comes the green touch. Nature opens its doors !
 
Plants are invited in, a garden is printed on the walls! Ivy weaves into the sofa; lichen grows over the woven chairs in the shade of a tree, and moss, like green velvet, carpets the stone, plants tumble down in steps, hiding in a net.

The nude touch, satin skin :
Fabric unfolds on the walls of the bedroom and forms a powdery velum on the ceiling. The corset dress of a fairground doll becomes the bed’s giant quilt. In this room, lingerie, a lace that fishnets on the carpet and is mirrored in the window panes.
For the reflective touch, the terrace !
 
Paris and the Eiffel tower resonate and multiply in facets shaped like diamonds, jewels, accessories for the sky and clouds, which play on a chequered mirror on the floor, the shiny lining of a cement grey coating. Clothes have gone from one state to another as we pass from one room to another.”  

Jean Paul Gaultier

A collaboration between Jean Paul Gaultier and French furniture brand Roche Bobois is due to be unveiled, in full, over the coming months. For now we can offer a what’s to come, by taking a look Jean Paul Gaultier’s renovation of Elle Decoration’s suite.

The apartment is located on the top floor of Paris’ architecture museum and was last decorated by Maison Martin Margiela and in 2008 by Christian Lacroix. Featuring different themes throughout, ranging from bleached effects to an abandoned conservatory, each space is extravagant.

Enzo Mari Autoprogettazione for Artek

Having worked on more than 2000 projects which have marked design history, Enzo Mari is probably Italy's most provocative designer. As a social commitment, through developing functional objects, he creates 'products' that celebrate an utopic world and the dignity of not alienated work. As art pieces they are brutally honest and at the same time beautiful to look at. Birgit Lohmann, Designboom's editor in chief, has studied industrial design under tutor Enzo Mari and directly after university has collaborated with him on various design projects for many years. One of her 'masters' favorite projects is his 'Autoprogettazione' series of 1974.


'Sedia 1- chair' is the first object from Mari's thought-provoking project 'Autoprogettazione'
to go into production with Finnish furniture company Artek. The original idea consisted of a series of 'do-it-yourself' instructions on how to construct the various pieces of furniture. Now, Artek offers customers to purchase a set of pre-cut pine wood boards, nails and instructions...

Artek will be celebrating its 75 years of art and technology production with a presentation at Spazio Rossana Orlandi. Meanwhile at the Triennale Museum mari will show a short documentary produced by Artek, which explains the concept behind 'autoprogettazione' and which demonstrates the building steps for 'Sedia 1'.
